The "Wurm Cafe" worm box is one of the oldest and therefore most sophisticated worm composters ever. The Wurm Cafe has been produced for over 25 years and is made of 100% durable recycled PE. With dimensions of 58cmx40cmx75cm (LxWxH including legs), the Wurm Cafe is one of the larger worm composters. Thanks to the principle of composting with several levels on top of each other, the worms in this worm composter work very space-saving and effectively.

How does the Wurm Café work?

The worm cafe consists of a collecting tray (at the bottom) for the worm tea (liquid fertilizer) and 3 work levels above it. On the first work level, 1 sheet of newspaper is spread out and the starter substrate made of coconut fibers is spread on it. You can then empty the bag with the worms over the starter substrate - they will then dig themselves in within a few minutes. If you ordered worm food, you can now sprinkle a very thin layer to start with and after 3 days start feeding them normal kitchen waste, paper and cardboard. You will see: your worms have a big appetite and after about 2 months the first work layer is already full of valuable worm humus. The second work layer is then placed on top and the worms can migrate to the second level by themselves through the holes in the floor. After the third level is full after about 6 months, you can harvest the first level 99% "worm-free" because the worms have already migrated upwards. Excess moisture can run down and be drained off using a tap. This liquid is called "worm tea" and is a highly active liquid fertilizer for your plants.

The Wurm Cafe is our favorite model among the tiered composters. The materials are very robust and the size is particularly appealing, because in principle larger worm composters are always preferable if you have the space for them. After a long test phase, we found the Wurm Cafe to be good, added it to our range and can highly recommend this worm composter for use on the balcony, terrace, in the basement, garage, ... etc.!

The only and very important criticism: the safety against "worm escape". For many it doesn't happen at all or only at the beginning (when the worms are getting used to their new home) that a few small worms can get outside between the floors (only in the dark, worms are afraid of light). The fact that this can happen in the dark means that we advise against using it in the immediate living space (kitchen, living room, etc.) or only at your own risk. We would also be happy to promote its use in the kitchen, for example - but for us an honest recommendation to our customers definitely takes priority :-)

If you generally want to be best protected against the issue of worm escape during the dark, you should not choose a level composter but a "Continuous Flow" composter such as the "Worm Bag" decide.
